So it’s been a while since I’ve been to a convention—although, I did go to my college’s anime convention, so I guess it’s more accurate to say that it’s been a while since I’ve been to a bigger convention. If you want to know about past conventions I’ve gone to (with pictures) just say so, and I’ll make another post.
This isn’t meant to be a review of the convention, because that’s impossible to do. I would’ve had to have gone to all the panels and events in order to have even an inkling of how the convention was overall. Instead, I’ll just be talking about my experience at this con.
I brought my father to this convention. He’s never been to one of these before and I thought since he’s been an anime fan longer than I have (technically), he should attend at least one.
I won’t bore you with all the details, just the highlights.
We got a late start on Friday because there weren’t any panels that interested us until late afternoon. We started with the panel “The 90’s Were All That!”. Bear in mind, we didn’t read many of the panel descriptions, if there even was one; I thought this panel was going to talk about 90’s anime, but the shows that were mentioned were all limited to the ones on Nickelodeon (hint: the part of the panel named “All That!”) (A note from The Editor: I loved All That! Formative childhood experience, right there).
Of course it was Nickelodeon shows… I just rolled with it. I came to the realization that I wasn’t much of a “90s kid” since I was a baby or toddler for a good chunk of it. Most of the shows they mentioned were on air too early in the 90s or right after I was born, and I obviously was not watching TV. I thought my dad would recognize some, but he apparently didn’t watch much tv while in college and really only started watching it when he watched me. The shows I did recognize reminded that most of the shows in the 90s for kids weren’t really kid shows after all. So inappropriate, but since they were in cartoon form no one challenged the content….or cared to do it.
I didn’t mention the hotel this took place in, but it was huge, and they were doing a lot of renovations. We got lost a lot, but we were able to take some time to just roam and figure out where everything was. This is the second convention I’ve been to that’s taken place in a Hyatt…..
One panel confused the crap out of both me and my father. I think we need someone to explain to us: what the hell ‘Anime Hell Classic’ is. We went to that panel… I thought it would be something about, like AMV Hell, but nope… nope nope… There was almost no anime in that entire two and a half our panel. I think we both lost some brain cells watching that. There were some funny parts, but they were few and far in between. We wanted to leave, but we were sitting right in the middle, so we stayed for the whole thing.
There’s also another panel I went to that gave me a great idea: The Bizzare anime panel. It’s exactly what you think it is. I wrote down all the anime they mentioned and I’m going to watch them, I think those would be some fun things to write about later. I also have my own mini list, it’s gonna be great, I swear.
By the end of Saturday night going into the wee hours of Sunday morning, we went to our last panel, The Ecchi Olympics (which was great by the way), and then called it quits. No, those aren’t all the panels we went to. There were a lot more, but like I said, no need to bore you with trivial details. If you really, really want to know more details, leave a comment and I’ll answer.
